The revised Toyota GR Supra sports car has been announced, and it now comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, ready to compete with Nissan's forthcoming Z.
The Supra will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2022 (October to December), with a six-speed manual transmission to go with its flagship 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, which still produces 285kW and 500Nm.
With computerized rev-matching capabilities, a large-diameter clutch, and a lower final drive ratio than the eight-speed automatic type, Toyota claims the three-pedal transmission has been "newly designed" for the GR Supra, hinting it may not be a ZF gearbox shared with BMW.
"To minimize weight, the engineering team changed an existing gearbox housing, driveshaft, and gear set and deleted items that were not necessary, such as the acoustic package," Toyota USA notes in a press statement.
The GR-branded spherical shift knob, which is believed to weigh just 200 grammes, is used to cycle through the gearbox's ratios, while the drive mode selection has been moved to give more room for the driver's hand during intense driving.
As an alternative to the eight-speed automatic, the new six-speed manual gearbox will be offered on both the entry-level GT and premium GTS models.
Toyota claims that it has "further improved the steering and suspension with redesigned stabilizer bushings and retuned adaptive variable suspension and other chassis control systems" in addition to the new gearbox option, claiming that this would "enhance handling performance and ride comfort."
New 19-inch forged wheels inspired by the GR Yaris Rallye and GR86 coupe have been added to GTS variants, which are finished in Titanium Dark Silver and are believed to weigh 1.2kg lighter at each corner.
The colour palette has been expanded to include Volcanic Ash Grey, Dawn Blue, and Avalanche White, as well as a tan inside option.
While not mentioned in the Australian press release, US models get a new 'Hairpin+' mode that gives them "more flexibility and pleasure while navigating tight curves on an upward incline" by "allowing] a bigger differential in the degree of wheel spin on the left and right tyres."
Meanwhile, the stability control system has been tweaked to prevent 'snap' oversteer at high speeds, and "the Track mode has been modified to allow for smooth drifting with throttle control flexibility," according to the press release.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the Toyota GR Supra 2023 will appear in Australian dealerships (October to December).
Pricing is yet to be verified, but based on Japanese sources, the manual gearbox should be priced the same as the automatic.
